  It had happened three years before Ron met Kelly. He’d been married to Hillary then. The intruder had entered their home through a downstairs window.

  “I hear something.” Hillary was beside him in bed.

  Ron sat up as a large man charged through the dark doorway with a weapon in his hand.

  Hillary screamed.

  Ron had little time to react. The impact of the crowbar was replaced by a floating sensation and then concrete. He woke on the basement floor, bound and gagged.

  Hillary was hogtied to a cellar crossbeam.

  Despite the dim light, Ron saw Hillary’s heart inside her open chest cavity. There was so much blood.

  The intruder grinned; his knife gleamed.

  Ron mentally recorded the bastard’s face.

  “Jesus!” Kelly shut her eyes.

  Ron swerved. The trucker behind them prodded his horn.

  “You’re going to kill us, Ron.”

  The murdering animal was eight car lengths ahead.

  “What are you going to do when we catch up to him?” Kelly said.
